In 1957, on a warm day in Thessaloniki, something unexpected happened. At the International Trade Fair, a Nestlé employee named Dimitris Vakondios couldn’t find hot water to make his usual instant coffee during a break.
So, he got creative.
He poured cold water, Nescafé, and sugar into a shaker—the same one used to demo a chocolate drink for kids—and gave it a vigorous shake. What poured out was a frothy, icy coffee with a rich layer of foam on top.
That improvised drink? It was the birth of the Greek frappé.
From Quick Fix to National Ritual
Word of the new drink spread quickly. Cafés began serving it. Locals embraced it. Nestlé leaned into the moment and promoted it as a distinctly Greek style of coffee.
