Each October, the quiet seaside village of Kardamyli turns into a gathering place for writers, artists, and travelers. The Kardamyli Festival — often called the Kardamyli Literary Festival — blends culture, conversation, and the natural beauty of the Mani Peninsula into one of Greece’s most intimate and inspiring events.

The 2025 edition runs October 2–6, and while this year’s tickets are already sold out, it’s the perfect time to start planning ahead for 2026.

A Festival Built on Conversation

The Kardamyli Festival is small by design — limited to about 400 attendees — creating a rare chance for meaningful exchanges between speakers and guests.

Mornings feature panel discussions and readings, afternoons are left open for exploring the village or the coastline, and evenings bring live music, communal dinners, and the kind of conversations that carry late into the night.

Past speakers have included Simon Schama, Rory Stewart, Lindsey Hilsum, Antony Gormley, and David Nott, with proceeds this year supporting the David Nott Foundation, which trains doctors working in crisis zones.

You can see the full program on the official Kardamyli Festival website.

Why Kardamyli Feels Different

Kardamyli sits on the Messinian Gulf, surrounded by olive groves, stone houses, and the dramatic mountains of the Mani. The town’s slow pace is part of its charm — you can attend a morning talk, then swim in clear water or stop at a taverna overlooking the sea before the evening events begin.

Because the festival stays intentionally small, it never feels crowded or commercial. It’s the kind of experience where you leave knowing both the place and its people.

Getting There

  • Festival Season (Summer–Autumn): Fly into Kalamata International Airport (KLX) — just 45 minutes from Kardamyli.

  • Off-Season Travel: Arrive via Athens International Airport (ATH), about a 3.5-hour drive.

A car rental is highly recommended. The roads are narrow and winding, so while the town is nearby, driving makes exploring much easier and safer.
